First time on Broadway
In the 19th century, New York was growing rapidly and people craved entertainment! Theaters began opening and producing shows targeting the middle class. To convenience New Yorkers these theaters opened in a central location, Broadway Street. Bowery Theater and Park Theater quickly rose onto everyone’s radar as they offered a wide range of productions, from operas to comedies. The first known performance in New York was in a small theater on Nassau Street in 1732, which seated 300 people.
“In the 1850s, New York City experienced an influx of immigrants, particularly from Ireland and Germany, bringing new audiences and performers into the city’s theater scene.” (1) New audiences with different backgrounds resulted in construction of bigger and lavish theaters. This laid the foundation for what we know as Broadway today.
